Howdy and Benjamin arrive at Randy’s Rescue Ranch

June 19, 2023 - Those of us in the rescue community know that rescue never sleeps. It is a never-ending battle to save lives. And for horses, donkeys, and ponies that end up in a kill-pen, time is critical. When these animals are relinquished to a kill pen their only hope are buyers, or rescues willing to come together to help pull them before the starve to death, or go to a slaughterhouse. It is a miserable way to die for all of these animals - an even more painful reality is that these animals once belonged to someone. Worked tirelessly for someone. Plowed, pulled carriages, gave people rides, on trails over and over. Gave someone babies to sell. Or even worse - once lived as a loved pet until they were no longer useful or ridable. Luckily Howdy and Benjamin are 2 more of the lucky ones.

Just behind the arrival of Sugar Pie and her filly Honey Bunch come yet 2 more kill pen survivors from Louisiana. Howdy is a handsome buckskin quarter horse that is around 12 years old. Before landing in the kill-pen, Howdy spent his days as a carriage horse pulling people about New Orleans day in and day out. Thankfully for him., he caught they eye of a ranch supporter who saw this sweet tired soul, with overgrown feet, and was able to pull him to safety in order to allow us to time to make the trip to pick him up and bring him back to the ranch..

But Howdy didn’t arrive alone. Howdy’s companion, Benjamin, is a miniature donkey. He was left tied to a post in the blazing sun, unable to escape t he heat and damaging rays, and suffered severe repetitive sunburn. His poor face covered in blisters and scabs and missing fur from the damage done to his skin. Benji was picked up by an animal control. He is only 2 years old.

These stories never get easier to hear, but we work hard to get them happy and healthy as soon as possible, and give them all the love attention they deserve after being so carelessly discarded. To contribute to their medical care, feed, or farrier services, donate today.
